Can You Die of Sleeping Disorder?

Sleep Apnea Treatment

Sleep Apnea or commonly known as sleeping disorder has been one of the most serious forms of sleeping disorders, but not many of us are aware of this problem. Before we delve deeper into how sleep apnea can be dangerous and whether or not it can be fatal, let’s understand the concept of sleep apnea better.

What is Sleep Apnea or Sleeping Disorder ?

As stated above, sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder that causes your breathing to become shallow while you’re sleeping. This pause in breathing can last for 10 seconds or longer and sometimes can occur for more than 30 times a day.

Signs and Symptoms You Should Watch Out For

1. Snoring: While snoring is considered to be normal while sleeping; if it’s disruptive, loud and highly inconsistent, it might be a sign of sleep apnea.

2. Breaks in breathing: During apnea, the tissues of your throat and tongue relax and restrict your airway, causing your breathing to slow down and the right amount of oxygen to stop flowing for a few seconds.

3. Frequent headaches: As already discussed, since a low level of oxygen reaches your brain, this causes frequent and unbearable headaches.

4. Increased blood pressure levels: You might experience a spike in your blood pressure as there is an inadequate level of oxygen supplied to your body.

5. Weight gain and obesity: In many cases, sleep apnea is more pertinent among individuals who are overweight, due to which fatty tissues surround your airway and cause restriction.

6. Depression or mood swings: Lack of sleep can be the cause of mood swings, which might be a reason for you to be prone to irritation and anxiety. If it’s a pattern and you’re experiencing a sleep disorder, this might be due to sleep apnea.

Can Sleep Apnea Be Fatal?

The answer to this is an unfortunate – yes. Although this condition is considered to be common, it is often left undetected. When your body realizes that it’s not getting the right amount of oxygen while sleeping, it tries to forcefully awaken you. This sleep disorder causes a disruption in the body’s circadian rhythms, results in an imbalance between the mind and body, elevates blood pressure levels, accelerates the heart rate and interrupts cardiac and respiratory functions.

How To Treat Sleep Apnea?

Any health condition can sound daunting at first, but it’s imperative that you get a better understanding of this condition and then search for effective ways to cure it. One of the most well-heard and common treatments for sleep apnea is through Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy. This method has proved to be extremely effective and can be a good treatment to cure sleep apnea.

Now that you have a better understanding of what actually is sleep apnea, the triggering signs, and symptoms, you can always be more alert than before. So, it’s always better to identify and recognize this sleeping disorder and then find the right remedy to help cure it.
