Who’s more at risk from Corona Virus?

Coronavirus has shaken and shattered the entire world. The number of people in reporting positive for Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is continuing to grow. In countries like Italy, China, and Iran, Coronavirus has created horror among people. Coronavirus has not spared India either. The number of confirmed Coronavirus cases in India has crossed 250 and the number of deaths caused by Coronavirus has increased to 4.

Although experts say that age is not the sole determinant of risk for severe illness or death by Coronavirus, people of some particular age groups are likely to more prone to Coronavirus as compared to others. Some people may be at higher risk of getting very sick from this illness.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “Older people and younger adults with serious medical conditions have a greater risk of becoming severely ill if they get infected with Covid-19.”

Dr. Susan Bleasdale, a spokesperson for the Infectious Diseases Society of America, says that elderly people with such cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, lung disease, hypertension, cancer, immuno-suppressed diseases, and comorbid conditions have the highest risk.

The table below shows the data of people from different age groups that were affected by Covid-19.

Why are older people at greater risk?

As the age of a person increases, the body’s immunity decreases. This makes us more vulnerable to infections of all types. And any sort of challenge to the body can do more damage. In such a situation, Covid-19 can easily attack people above the age of 60. Of every 100 Covid-19 positive cases reported all over the world, a minimum of 20 elders are diagnosed with the same daily. Approximately, 31% of Covid-19 cases in the US were in the age group of 60+ years, CDC experts concluded in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

Four in five Australians aged 65 years and over have at least one chronic condition. The biggest risk factor for dying of Coronavirus is cardiovascular (heart) disease, diabetes, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

It is advised to senior citizens take precautions to prevent Covid-19. Some precautions that the senior citizens can undertake are-

  • Stay at home as much as possible.
  • Sanitize hands every hour.
  • Avoid crowded places.
  • Maintain a balanced diet to keep the body immune.
  • Practice social distancing.
  • Seek medical help, if feeling unwell.

Proper precautions and mindfulness can help you fight adverse conditions. Stay Alert. Stay Informed.
